UEFA Champions LeagueRound of 16, Second Legs Preview

    17 March 2026

Four ties, four very different stories. Three sides face elimination deficits that border on the impossible; one tie is the most evenly balanced of the evening. Here is everything you need to know going into tonight's Champions League second legs.

    Sporting CP vs Bodø/Glimt
    17:45Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon
    First leg:Bodø/Glimt 3–0 Sporting CP

One of the most dramatic elimination scenarios in tonight's programme. Sporting need to score four goals and concede none to advance — a task that sits somewhere between improbable and impossible on paper, but one that guarantees they will attack with maximum intensity from the first whistle.

The statistics frame this as the highest-scoring game of the evening. Bodø/Glimt's winning run in the Champions League extended to five victories in a row in the first leg, with Sondre Brunstad Fet converting a penalty and Ole Didrik Blomberg finishing superbly. Their away form is extraordinary — in their last 9 away fixtures, Over 2.5 FT hit 100% with an average of 2.22 goals scored. Sporting at home are no less prolific: Over 2.5 FT stands at 88.9% across their last 9 home games.

The combined O2.5 probability from Goal Analytics sits at 94.4% — among the highest readings we have recorded this season. Head-to-head history is limited to a single previous meeting so carries little statistical weight, but the match context alone tells the same story the numbers do: Sporting must score relentlessly, and Bodø/Glimt have shown all season they punish open teams on the counter with clinical efficiency.

    What to watch

Whether Sporting can score early enough to create genuine belief — and whether Bodø/Glimt's counter-attacking machine clicks into gear as the home side inevitably pushes forward.

    Manchester City vs Real Madrid
    20:00Etihad Stadium, Manchester
First leg:Real Madrid 3–0 Manchester City

Federico Valverde's stellar first-half hat trick was the catalyst as Real Madrid eased past Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg, becoming the first Uruguay player to score a hat trick in the Champions League. City now need four goals without reply — the same mountain Sporting face tonight — and do so without several key players.

Rico Lewis and Josko Gvardiol remain unavailable with long-term injuries for City, while for Madrid, Bellingham and Rodrygo continue to be out. In a boost for Madrid, Mbappé — who has scored 38 goals in 33 appearances this season — is travelling with the squad. With a three-goal cushion, Arbeloa is widely expected to manage the tie conservatively and bring Mbappé off the bench rather than risking him from the start.

City actually began the Bernabéu game brightly, pressing high and creating early chances, but were caught out repeatedly by Madrid's pace on the counter. Guardiola will demand more of the same pressing intensity tonight, knowing it is their only realistic path to goals — but Real Madrid defending a lead at the Etihad with a full squad is a very different proposition to an open game.

    What to watch

Whether Haaland can drag City back into the tie in the opening 30 minutes, and how quickly Madrid decide to sit back and absorb pressure rather than attack.

    Statistical signal

Tie effectively decided — expect City to create. Goals at both ends are historically likely when these two meet.

    Chelsea vs Paris Saint-Germain
    20:00Stamford Bridge, London
    First leg:PSG 5–2 Chelsea

Paris Saint-Germain scored three goals in the final 20 minutes as the holders overwhelmed Chelsea 5-2, with substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring twice in the dying minutes to put PSG firmly in control. Chelsea twice fought back to level at 2-2 but were undone by a goalkeeper error that gifted PSG the lead for the third time, after which the floodgates opened.

Chelsea need to win by four goals to advance on aggregate — a feat that would rank among the greatest European comebacks in history. Chelsea don't head into this clash in the best of form, suffering a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday. It remains unclear who Rosenior will select in goal after the controversial decision to play Jorgensen in the first leg, and Estevão Willian has been absent with injury.

PSG meanwhile had nearly a full week of rest after their Ligue 1 match was postponed, arriving at Stamford Bridge calm and full of confidence. Bookmakers see Chelsea as a slight favourite to win the match on the night, but the consensus is clear: PSG are expected to advance.

    What to watch

Whether Chelsea can summon one of Stamford Bridge's famous European nights early, and how Luis Enrique sets up PSG — defend deep and absorb, or trust their attacking quality to end the tie completely.

    Statistical signal

Both teams have structural reasons to score — Chelsea out of desperation, PSG with Kvaratskhelia, Barcola and Dembélé available to exploit any space left by a necessarily attacking home side.

    Arsenal vs Bayer Leverkusen
    20:00Emirates Stadium, London
    First leg:Bayer Leverkusen 1–1 Arsenal

Arsenal's eight-game winning run in the Champions League came to an end as they needed an 89th-minute penalty from substitute Kai Havertz to rescue a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen. It is the most evenly poised tie of the four second legs tonight — the only one where either side can advance with a single goal advantage.

Arsenal carry a crucial away goal into the Emirates, meaning Leverkusen must score tonight to stay alive. Arteta's side have been in excellent domestic form and the Emirates under European lights is a formidable atmosphere. Arteta has hinted Max Dowman could see greater involvement after making an "almost impossible" impact against Everton on Saturday.

For Leverkusen, the task is clear: score away from home against a well-organised Arsenal defence. They showed in the first leg they are capable of hurting Arsenal — but the away goal rule means a 0-0 or 1-1 tonight sends Arsenal through, putting enormous pressure on Xabi Alonso's side to take the game to Arsenal rather than sit back.

    What to watch

Whether Leverkusen can find the goal they need before Arsenal's defensive structure settles in — and whether Havertz adds another moment of significance against his former club.

    Statistical signal

The most tactically complex tie of the evening. Leverkusen must attack; Arsenal are happy to absorb and counter. Goals are likely but the pattern will differ from the other three ties.
